Syria has tested its military's ability to "repulse any aggression the enemies of our nations might think about", the country's state media has said. Its air force, air defence units and naval forces have been conducting manoeuvres with warplanes, helicopters, surface-to-air and ground-to-sea missiles.
State TV also showed special forces being dropped from helicopters in a drill described as being "similar to a real battle".
"The manoeuvres aim to test the capabilities of the air force and air defense to repulse any aggression the enemies of our nations might think about," it said.
It comes as human rights observers say at least 47 people died in the unrest on Tuesday - 27 of them soldiers killed by rebels in the south of the country.
Activist groups said about 100 people were killed on Monday, the same day Syria agreed to allow in foreign monitors under an Arab League plan aimed at stopping the bloodshed.
The opposition is deeply sceptical that the agreement to allow the monitors in is anything other than stalling for time as international pressure on President Bashar al Assad grows.
